This book addresses several issues of literary expression and interactional changes in literature and theatre between Taiwan and Japan from 1895 to 1960. The author, Wu Pei-Chen, reconstructs an equal, interactive cultural dis- course on those Japanese writers with different identities or purposes as an 'immigrant' group of others in colonial Taiwan. The Meiji Restoration's policy of 'westernisation' led to a series of modernising reforms, which significantly impacted literary and artistic activities. Encounters between Formosa and Japan focuses on both Japanese and Taiwanese writers under the influence of European trends in literature and art and analyses their cultural networks and creative expressions.
